Composer, Musician, Student: contrabassic: Since being back on tumblr this past week, I’ve noticed...:

contrabassic:

Since being back on Tumblr this past week, I’ve noticed the negativity in music major and classical music tags - classical musicians, it would seem, like to count mistakes, to look for flaws. Yes, we have been trained to do this to ourselves, but doing it to others all the time makes us look like assholes and ruins the spirit of making music. Make 1000 mistakes if it means you are saying what you want (actually, don’t do that). Music is about communication and if all you get out of a performance is the 7th chord someone missed, you’re missing the point.

If you listen to music in a technical aspect, and even more if you removed from the music by minute technical mistakes, you are not listening to music. You are solely critiquing it, missing the entire message, mood, and spirit of the work entirely.

It’s a bastardization of the art form to a test, with you being the grader.

Don’t do that.
