Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony at Norway’s Oslo Rådhus

For photographs of the Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony tonight, be sure to check out the Oslo Rådhus location page. To tune into the other Nobel Prize Ceremony in Stockholm, visit the Konserthuset location page.

Every year on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death, the Nobel Committee celebrates the recipients of their prizes in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, and Peace. All of the award ceremonies take place in Stockholm, Sweden at the Konserthuset, except for the Peace Prize, which is granted at the Oslo City Hall (Oslo Rådhus) in Norway.

The Oslo Rådhus that hosts the Peace Prize Ceremony took 19 years to build (1931-1950) because of the outbreak of World War II in 1940. Artists from all over Norway competed to decorate the hall, and the winners created a stunning collection of hand-crafted furniture, folk murals, custom clocks, and priceless artwork, including a painting by Edvard Munch in the “Munch Room.”

Earlier today, the Norweigan Nobel Committee awarded the 2012 Peace Prize to the European Union (EU). The President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso and President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz gave speeches and accepted the prize amidst the Oslo Rådhus’ main hall.
