Sandro Botticelli (1445 - 1510)

In 1481, Pope Sixtus IV summoned Botticelli and other prominent Florentine and Umbrian artists to fresco the walls of the Sistine Chapel. The iconological program was the supremacy of the Papacy. Sandro’s contribution included the Temptations of Christ, the Punishment of the Rebels and Trial of Moses. He returned to Florence, and “being of a sophistical turn of mind, he there wrote a commentary on a portion of Dante and illustrated the Inferno which he printed, spending much time over it, and this abstention from work led to serious disorders in his living." Thus Vasari characterized the first printed Dante (1481) with Botticelli’s decorations; he could not imagine that the new art of printing might occupy an artist. The masterpieces Primavera (c. 1482) and The Birth of Venus (c. 1485) were both seen by Vasari at the villa of Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de’ Medici at Castello in the mid-16th century, and until recently, it was assumed that both works were painted specifically for the villa. Recent scholarship suggests otherwise: the Primavera was painted for Lorenzo’s townhouse in Florence, and The Birth of Venus was commissioned by someone else for a different site. By 1499, both had been installed at Castello.

I wish that I could buy pieces from popular museums and put them in a private collection, so that people wouldn’t put their nasty-azz hands on them. Today at the Met there were so many people sneakily touching some of the stuff and I really wanted to slap somebody.

Bittersweet.

Lives in the chests of the long-forgotten

the dust collected upon its shoulders.

His relatives are always in near proximity

but his children are always away, never seeming to visit.

He wears the gloss of his distinguished auburn coat

a piece from a bygone era, once again coming back into fashion.

The sheen of his clothing never fading

the colour of its antiquated hue never becoming spoiled.

He has the loveliest of voices

for the fact that he hasn’t sung in a century.

With the dexterity of his bow and the power of his movements

he can strike down the most dissonant of philistines.

Bittersweet most certainly has numerous friends

always with him, every minute of the day.

But in unfortunate reality they do not venture outside their homes often,

the fear of rebuttal always present.

Bittersweet dreams of being “all the rage” once more

to be praised by many.

Unknown to him on what is on the horizon,

the hearts of many to fall for him once more.

A traveler from the eons ago, past from the spotlight to obscurity

it’s subtle differences still apparent when viewed.

The sound archaic, almost to a nasal-like quality and tone

it’s frets adding to its Baroquian tune.

It’s harmonious, melodious, even choral churn,

of fever to the masses, the “Lauden Lyra” in everyone’s hearts.

The instrument of the wealthy and affluent, followers of the King’s guide

though it would not always keep up to such heights.

The solemn cry of its legato movements, the couplets of Spain in the court’s order

echoing, continuous throughout the Renaissance.

The basso, of all, playing through the centuries further,

the speakers for the repertoire of the French and German elite.

As revolution spread spread though, the hatred upon it grew

which may care to explain its eternal solitude.

Once and now once more the expression of utter emotions,

the Laudem Lyra now once more in vogue.
